Breathe
Breathe
I wrote this poem soon after the first lockdown in Scotland. It was the first poem I had written in a long time, the words seemed to be waiting to express what so many felt.
As I stand here:
the sea, the sky, the dunes and I
my lungs breathe in this magnificent air
my body vibrates with each droplet of oxygen
my cells embrace the purity of its touch
and I breathe.
I breathe for those who are on ventilators
I breathe for those wearing protective masks
I breathe for those that wait full of anxiety
I breathe for all of us.
Not because I’ve been told
not because I’m better
Not because I’m enlightened
I breathe because I can
I breathe because I love.
And gratitude brings me to my knees
brings me to tears
brings me to joy.
My breath is not my own
it’s ours.
Let’s breathe
for all.
