On Cats

Blog Image On Cats

Pets are a fundamental part of many people’s lives. In my case and that of my family and close friends, we have mostly been conquered by cats. I wrote this poem before Luna came into my life, so I want to give her a special acknowledgement as a source of joy, sanity and sometimes, impatience.

On cats

Independent, adventurous, arrogant,
curious, ferocious and playful,
in the feline world of night stalking
and diurnal naps
there are kings and rascals
princesses and jesters.

There are loyal nurses guarding their mistress’ bedside
and indifferent rogues demanding food and shelter.
An incessant purring that guides the hand
to scratch a tummy,
wilful eyes that melt us into rendition,
generous half dead gifts that make our stomach churn.

Bilbo, Gus, Luqui and Lucy
Tina, Bug, Jackson and Lee
Rosie, Simba, Pixie and Trimble too
Let’s not forget Timothy, Panther, Traf and Onassis.

To all those fury love familiars
that make our lives shine
and our patience wander:
gratitude and awe.
As well as salmon, tuna, chicken, jamon de bellota
and whatever tickles their fancy.
